Although he later lived for many years in Wales, he regularly returned to Scotland to spend the summer months on Iona painting the landscapes and seascapes of his childhood.
His subjects included landscapes of the coasts of the UK, particularly those associated with his childhood in Scotland, and Wales, and still life paintings often using a vibrant palette associated with the Scottish Colourists and their followers.
