The Burg and Ben More from Ardtun Mull

The Isle of Mull is the largest island of the Southern Hebrides in Scotland and has been inhabited since the end of the Ice Age around 6500bc with over 300 miles of coastline, it’s blue waters and sandy coves offer a feast for lovers of nature and wildlife. It is fairly mountainous with Ben More (966 metres). Mull is home to over 250 different bird species including the White-tailed Eagle, Hen Harrier, and Golden Eagle and has featured recently on BBC Springwatch tv series. The huge coastline provides a fantastic opportunity to spot sea birds and waders, Minke whales, porpoises and dolphins.

Tobermory, the main town on the island, is an attractive destination for tourists with its brightly painted buildings along the main street to the pier. It was the location for most of the filming of the BBC children’s series “Balamory”. Once a thriving fishing village it is now a great set off point for exploring the abundant wildlife the area has to offer with many attractions for the visitor.

The Isle of Mull or simply Mull is the second largest island of the Inner Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland in the council area of Argyll and Bute. It is a favourite subject for one of Scotland’s best loved landscape painters John Lowrie MorrisonJolomo and his painting “The Burg and Ben More from Ardtun, Mull” depicts the very distinctive stepped outline on the western peninsula of the island formed by the molten lava from volcanic eruptions many millions of years ago. Ben More, the only mountain over 3000ft in the Southern Hebrides is known as a Munro after the Scottish mountaineer Sir Hugh Munro (1856-1919) who is best known for his list of mountains in Scotland over 3000ft which are popularly known as Munros and are a great attraction to the adventurous traveller.
